On the Blog
We have been through some trying times the last couple of year, to say the least. I know with all the current uncertainties and attempting to get back into a new normal has probably taken a tole on your mental health. It definitely has mine! After being in a pretty bad place for several months, I knew I absolutely had to pull my self out. It is a working progress, of course. However, I feel so much better than I did just a few weeks ago. This is what has helped me, and hopefully can help you too! These are the 7 ways to significantly improve your mental health.
Significantly Improve your Mental Health
1.Move your body, every single day.
Whether it is a walk, run, stretch, dance, weightlifting, etc. It will help by giving you more energy, releasing endorphins, quality of sleep. Getting outdoors to exercise is even better as vitamin D will also provide strength to your mental health.
2.Tuning in to self-development blogs, books, audio podcasts, and videos.
Find ones you enjoy that also gives you motivation, and I am not talking about the true crime stuff. I think it's very important to focus on positive, uplifting energy and voices. A good Podcast is my absolute go to. And these are perfect to listen to while you move your body!
3.Write it Down.
Journaling is an absolute must when improving your mental health. At any moment you are feeling sad, mad, anxious, even glad; write it all down. I find journaling so helpful because it is a way to just get it all out. I make it a point to stick to pen on paper instead of using my phone. Writing is a great way to strengthen those brain muscles.
I finally started therapy, and I truly believe it is something every single person can benefit from. I do my therapy video calls from the comfort of my home. The app is called Cerebral, and it is a total game-changer. You will get matched with a licensed therapist right away. Currently, in-person therapy is just not an option for me, so I was thrilled when I discovered this app. It is also more affordable than traditional therapy. Of course, in-person is always an option as well, however I found this to be a great starting point.
5.Fuel your body with cleaner options.
The cleaner you eat, the better your body will feel. The better your body feels, the better your mind will feel. I am drinking more water, and really making a point to eat clean/natural foods. Also, I have stopped drinking alcohol. I want to physically feel good and energized every single day and alcohol will always prevent that from happening. So, I have cut it out completely. Taking control of my mental health has been my priority, therefore I don’t even miss it.
*I do have an overindulgence of Diet Dr. Pepper, because hey, I am still human!
6.Cut out ALL negative energy.
Yes, I am talking about anything that can bring your vibe down. Turn off the news, stop scrolling Facebook, cut off that toxic friend, ETC. This is so important to your mental health, and longevity. Take baby steps if you need to, and replace each thing with something positive. For example: I replaced TV shows that made me feel sad or anxious with shows where I can find inspiration and humor. So, goodbye gloomy Grey's Anatomy! Hello happy HGTV! or Hallmark ;) You will notice a quick mind shift when you switch focus to positive energy supplies.
7.Take the time for self-care.
Mental health should be the same priority as physical health in my opinion. If you get injured or have an illness, you can’t just “fake it till ya make it.” Your body needs rest, and time to recover. It is the same with your mental health. Take the time to rest, take hot baths, read the books, and go on walks. Yes, even if you are working full-time with three children, as I have to remind myself.
I hope you were able to find this article helpful and if you have tried any of these or have some you would like to add, please leave them in the comment section! And please don't forget: Mental Health Matters & YOU MATTER.
